Accessible Path: Yes

Mileage: 1.0 mile Loop

Hiding among the Los Angeles sprawl, adjacent to the 101 Freeway, Echo Park Lake sticks out like a green thumb. This urban oasis is a great place to take a break from city life and enjoy the beauty and simplicity of a sun-soaked lake.

To begin your walk, first park along the street and head toward the lake. A great place to start is at the Echo Park Lake boathouse. If you're in need of refreshment, grab a quick drink from the cafe inside before you head out.

The trail around the lake is fully paved and is about a mile long. You'll have great views of the water all around the path, with the spouting jets in the middle drawing your eye across the lake. As you make your way to the North side of the lake, you'll pass a statue of the Lady of the Lake. Her full, formal name is "Nuestra Reina de Los Angeles," our Queen of Los Angeles. As she gazes out across the water toward the downtown skyline, she has full command of her city.

Continue your leisurely walk until you complete the loop at the boathouse. If you're feeling up to it, and you have a partner with strong legs, take a paddle around the lake in a swan. The crew at the dock was very helpful in helping get me on the boat, and I'm sure they'll be happy to help anybody who asks for it. Steering is a little tricky, but you'll quickly get the hang of it - just be on the look out for any other birds that want to join your flock!
