Lava Trees State Monument

In the Puna District of the Big Island of Hawaii, Kilauea is the dominant geologic force that has shaped the island. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park draws millions of visitors every year, leaving each of them awestruck at the earth-shaping power of the volcano. Outside the National Park, just south of Pahoa, lies Lava Tree State Monument - yet another reminder of how lava can shape the landscape.

Lava trees are oddities. They're formed when liquid lava flows through the forest. As the lava impacts the trees, the moisture contained within quickly cools the lava immediately around them. The trees, of course, eventually succumb to the lava inundation, usually catching fire. As the lava flow subsides, the cooled lava around the trees remains, leaving behind a hollow monument.

Paved Pathway

Lava Tree State Monument is a great place to view these fossilesque structures. The lava trees found here are from a lava flow in the late 18th century. In the years that have passed, the forest has once again reclaimed the area. These igneous spire molds are great reminders of the powerful geological forces that have shaped life on the islands.

From the parking area, find the path leading into the forest near the restroom. You'll soon see the covered picnic area which is a great place to enjoy a meal. Just beyond the picnic area, contained within a circular portion of the pathway, you'll see the first of many lava trees.

After you've admired the first of these unique structures, follow the paved pathway to the right. This is the beginning of the loop trail. The paved trail wanders lazily through the forest, revealing more of these beautiful, black lava trees; some of which extend up to eight feet vertically from the green underbrush.

The trail continues through the forest, offering views of more of these small wonders. Eventually you'll find yourself back at the first lava tree surrounded by the circular pathway, ending your short journey through through this beautiful former lava flow.
